Labradoodle Characteristics

What is a Labradoodle?

As the name suggests, Labradoodles are a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle--either standard, medium, miniature, or toy sized. These fluffy dogs make for a perfect family-friendly companion that would be a great addition to any household!

How Big are Labradoodles?

Depending on the type of Poodle they originate from, Labradoodles can be a variety of different sizes:

  • Toy--13 to 20 pounds
  • Miniature--15 to 30 pounds
  • Medium--30 to 45 pounds
  • Standard--45 to more than 100 pounds

The height of Labradoodles ranges between 14 and 24 inches on average, although they can sometimes be larger or smaller. The wide variance in sizes allows you to find the exact size you want based off of your personal needs or preferences.

Labradoodle Coat & Grooming

Depending on the percentage of Labrador or Poodle genes that they carry, Labradoodles can carry a number of different coats. Those with a higher percentage of Labrador tend to have slightly shaggier and straighter hair, whereas those with a higher percentage of Poodle tend to have softer, curlier hair. Both forms of coats make these dogs very beautiful, but also come with a higher level of maintenance.

Labradoodles should be groomed with a brush at least once every other day, and should be clipped/trimmed every 8 to 12 weeks. Those with more Poodle genes tend to require a little more maintenance due to their curlier hair.

Labradoodles also tend to be hypoallergenic, which makes them a fantastic option for anyone who struggles with dog allergies. In that case, those with more Poodle-like coats tend to be the preferred option.

What is the Temperament or Personality of Labradoodles?

Labradoodles are extremely fun, friendly, and loving dogs which makes them perfect for families or somebody looking for a loyal companion. They enjoy playing outside and tend to have a natural affinity for water due--a trait inherited from their Labrador Retriever genes. Labradoodles also tend to be quite social and associate well with other people, as well as other dogs. At our facilities here in Oklahoma at Furever Friends, we pride ourselves on creating long lineages of well-tempered dogs by maintaining well-trained and loved parent dogs, as well as making an effort to socialize our puppies well in their foundational weeks before going to their new homes.

How hard are Labradoodles to train?

Labradoodles are highly intelligent dogs which, along with their natural playfulness and eagerness to please, gives them great potential to be trained. However, as with any breed, it is important to start training your puppy as soon as you bring him home. Even at a very young age, these intelligent dogs can absorb more information than you think.

What is the Health of Labradoodles?

Of course, all dog breeds have the potential to develop health issues over time. However, Labradoodles are naturally rather healthy dogs and have an average lifespan of 10 to 15 years. Here at Forever Friends, we also offer a Health Guarantee and adhere to an extremely high standard of health to ensure that all of our puppies go home with their new families healthy & happy.
